“F-bomb” and “sexting” are among the new words made mainstream by the 2012 edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. They are two of 15 new additions announced on Tuesday.
Other words include “bucket list,” “gassed,” “aha moment,” “energy drink,” and “game changer.”
“Some of the new words this year provide colorful images,” said Merriam-Webster editor-at-large Peter Sokolowski in a statement posted online. “Terms like ‘man cave,’ ‘underwater’ (when used to describe mortgages), ‘earworm,’ and ‘bucket list’ paint vivid pictures in your mind. They show that English-speakers can be very creative as they describe the world around them.”
