The New York City Board of Health approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s controversial proposal to ban large sugary drinks from restaurants, concession stands, and other venues, an initiative to curb obesity but also seen as an attempt by government to regulate behavior.
Beginning March 12, the city will prohibit the sale of cups and bottles of non-diet soda, sweetened teas, and other calorie-packed beverages larger than 16 ounces. The ban will apply in fast food restaurants, mobile food carts, delis, and concessions at movie theaters, stadiums or arenas. The city will begin fining sellers for violating the ban in mid-June.
