President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned an attack on the US embassy in Libya, which killed four Americans including US ambassador Chris Stevens. The president also ordered increased security at US diplomatic posts worldwide.
The attack erupted from protests against an American-made film seen as insulting the Prophet Mohammad. Similar protests also occurred at the US embassy in Egypt.
Mitt Romney released a statement criticizing the Obama administration for its initial response to the attacks.
Update: US officials now believe that the deadly attack on the US embassy in Libya may have been planned in advance and not solely the result of spontaneous protests.
