Social media and taste buds. The new social media arm of Walmarts, @WalmartLabs, found that cake pops were becoming popular. Starbucks was offering them and people were talking about them. Wal-Mart decided to carry cake-pop makers and found they were popular enough  to bring them back the following holiday season. Via New York Times
