At the upcoming London Olympic games, the London Eye will light up in a pattern that reflects the overall sentiment about the games among Twitter users each night. Positive tweets turn the giant Ferris wheel yellow, while negative ones turn it purple.
This is all thanks to UK energy company EDF and an algorithm put together by a group of MIT engineers on “sentiment analysis.” The algorithm scans for tweets in the UK using the #Energy2012 hashtag to determine the positivity. It will recognize intensifiers such as “very,” phrases such as “omg,” and even emoticons. We’re tweeting this a thumbs up.
